Gordon Bonnet

The Japanese collage style of kiri-e uses slivers of paper to create form, texture, and image; I take this style one step further, using old maps, print material, pieces of dyed art paper to create images of natural scenes and abstract designs. My pieces invite you to look from far away, then closely - and then pick up a magnifying glass.

ADDRESS

5851 Route 227, Trumansburg, NY 14886

STUDIO DIRECTIONS

From Ithaca, come up Route 96 North. About five miles past the hospital, you will see a green sign pointing to the left, saying "Perry City." Go left; five miles later, you will come to the Perry City intersection, the only stop sign on the road. Continue straight on Route 227. We are a mile and a half past the Perry City stop sign, on the right hand side of the road, in a white Cape Cod with a large, untidy flower garden and a greenhouse on the right. The studio is above the greenhouse.

ARTISTS' STATEMENT

My father was a Marine stationed in Japan after World War II, and sent home many pieces of Japanese artwork and music that inspired me to create my own style of cut-paper art. I teach high school biology, environmental sciences, Latin, Greek, and almost anything else my independent-study students want to learn. My interest in Japanese art and natural science combine to inform my work. I am also part of the local music scene -- I play flute, whistle, and bagpipes and perform in the trios Crooked Sixpence and Alizé.
