BIO
As a child, an innate love of nature and art had me trying to decide what to be when I grew up. The two have been inseparable, and ultimately it wasn’t necessary to exclude either.
With educational degrees in biology and zoology, I was primarily self-taught in the arts, though with guidance from talented individuals over the years. A stay of nearly 4 years in Italy enabled me to study materials and techniques of the Old Masters and to work in the tradition of Renaissance artists.
Today I do professional biological illustration and maintain a career in the life science field. My illustrations have appeared in educational science publications and in scientific journals. I have exhibited my artwork in cities in the United States and in Europe, and my work is also part of private collections worldwide.
I place emphasis on utilizing what I consider to be the classical elements of art, including line quality, negative space, composition, and pathways of movement through the piece. It is my opinion that these elements, no matter what style the work, are essential to artwork that holds its quality over time. Through my art, I aim to nurture a sensitivity and respect towards nature, and
help people gain a deeper understanding for our place in the environment.
