BIO
In choice of subject, I am inspired by light, images, and moments around me. I use a frozen image as a sort of cross-section of life, an instant that epitomizes a greater theme of life.
I am a self-taught artist, and have painted since childhood. I consider that self-teaching to be ongoing, a daily part of art-making. In technique, I am inspired and instructed by the tools, the media, and the history of art itself. The brushes, glazes, inks, pastels, and papers call me to work with them, and any new
medium begs to be explored. A trip to a museum rejuvenates my work; the history of painting, from gilded religious iconography to contemporary abstract art, inspires new subjects, and informs my execution.
I am an artist by inclination and necessity. At university, my formal studies of subjects – mathematics, French literature, engineering – shaped the painting I continued in my spare time. But after struggling several years with a physical disability, facing constraint and immobility in a wheelchair, I realized that
the most liberating mobility comes from artistic creation. Now the balance and paradoxes of mathematics speak to my compositions, and the structure and chiaroscuro of a Balzac novel find their way into my cityscapes. All previous study has led to new art, art to new study, and art has become my sole profession.
