Martha Elizabeth Phillips

As I have become increasingly aware of ecology and recycling, my interest in using media other then paint has expanded. My new art is mostly mixed media, collage and mosaics. These mediums allow me to use up to 90% recycled materials. To me there is something very satisfying in taking old and broken pieces and turning them into an interesting new whole.

BIO

I grew up in a family that valued creativity, especially in the fields of writing and music. I enjoyed drawing and painting but it was something I did in secret. I wanted to take classes but could not bring myself to let others see my work. In mid-life I took some art history classes. I was so excited by the art we were studying I took the plunge and enrolled in studio art classes. From the first class I could not put down my pencil or brush. Everything around me disappeared as I became so engrossed in what I was doing. I was no longer intimidating for others to see my work. I had found my calling.

I love painting people in their everyday settings as well as still life and landscape. I take what I see and make it my own. I could not express what I communicate through my art in words or music, and that, for me, is the essence of art.

My awareness of ecology has caused me to explore other means of creating art using recycled materials. I have spent a lot of my life helping people in despair to put their lives back together. I find taking broken and used materials to make a new piece of art a naturally, satisfying process, a symbol of hope.
