Sylvia Taylor
I enjoy using animals in my relief prints to explore the pathos, humor and humanity of life.
My prints are created with wood or linoleum blocks which are carved, inked and printed entirely by hand. The process is time consuming yet peacefully meditative and sometimes even mystical in my studio by the woods.

ADDRESS
1989 Ellis Hollow Road, Ithaca, NY 14850STUDIO DIRECTIONS
My home studio is at 1989 Ellis Hollow Road between NY 79 and Ellis Hollow Creek Road. The house is a greenish ranch with grey trim directly across from a little side street called Ogden.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am drawn to narratives and sentiments that are paradoxical, bewildering and a little bit absurd. Much of my work has a narrative quality with an undercurrent of longing, uncertainty and ambiguity. Vulnerability and innocence may have a hint of something foreboding. Revelry may be colored with sorrow. I find inspiration in the tension created by awkward and seemingly incongruent forces. I often use animal characters in my prints to explore these themes. Not only do they serve as ideal metaphors for human instincts and emotions, but they often “collaborate” with me on an intuitive level, taking the work in a direction I wouldn’t have originally considered.
